The Pattern 68 Smock is famous for its use during the Falklands War and The Troubles. It was also very popular and well-liked among British soldiers for its durability and practicality.
Due to its popularity among British troops many of the Pattern 68 Smocks in existence have seen heavy wear and tear, making them a relatively rare find in the modern surplus market.
Disruptive Pattern Material & Its History
This classic British camouflage pattern traces its origins back to the Paratrooper Regiment's Denison smocks of WWII. This camouflage was used only by special units at first. As time wore on it became clear that standard issue camouflage uniforms for the average soldier were the future.
The British Ministry of Defence began developing a camouflage pattern that would become general issue for all British soldiers in the early 1960s. That pattern was the now iconic Disruptive Pattern Material (DPM), which was first issued on a small scale in 1963.
By 1966 the pattern was adopted for use by the British armed forces in the form of the Pattern 60 DPM uniform. The later Pattern 68 uniform would become the first general issue camouflage uniform of the UK in 1972.
Several versions of the DPM uniform would be produced between its initial adoption and replacement by the Multi-Terrain Pattern (MTP). The first iteration was the Pattern 60, a short-lived camouflage uniform based on the olive drab Pattern 60 uniform cut.
The second and perhaps most famous DPM uniform is known as Pattern 68. It was this uniform that was worn during the Falkland Islands War. This uniform was very well-liked by British servicemen and many of them were worn out by everyday use, making them a desirable collector's piece.
Then came the Pattern 84, first fielded in 1985. This uniform was influenced by lessons learned during the Falkland Islands campaign of 1982. The P84 served for ten years before being replaced by the very briefly used Pattern 94.
Pattern 94 DPM uniforms were only produced for a short time, serving for less than two years before being replaced by the final iteration of DPM uniform: Soldier 95.
The S95 uniform was the first DPM uniform to be produced using ripstop fabric. It was also the last DPM uniform adopted by the UK's armed forces before their adoption of a Multicam/DPM blend called Multi-Terrain Pattern (MTP).

I’ve ordered three of these smocks, I’m fairly confident you sent me the pattern 85 and not the 68 or at least I’m fairly confident about that. To clarify, the pattern 68 should have green tags and the inside shouldn’t be camo as well as sized differently than the way the 85 going by size 1-9 right? If that’s the case you guys definitely didn’t send me the correct smocks and I would like to be refunded the amount $210 as if I were charged for the pattern 85 instead of being charged for the 68.
Condition not that great for the price.
Arrived in good condition. All buttons are there. Only problem? Odifferous . It stanky. Like sad aftermath of bubble n squeak, beans n toast and too many tepid pints of porter. Overnight soak with A&H odor blast with oxiclean detergent took care of it. Recommend
I collect British Army smocks and have been trying to fill a hole in my collection for a bit. Recently, APD listed their 68 pattern smocks for sale and the price was right. The item arrived shortly after the order was placed and what arrived was a gently used 68 pattern smock.
I've always loved Dom but never took the step to purchase any clothing.
Took the chance on this smock and I don't regret it.
I chose a medium, issued good. As a 5'5" 155 lbs guy.
I'm always in the middle of small and medium and this just worked.
Sleeves are good fit is just a bit less than tight.

Nearly every military has different sizing charts and schemes, which is why we've taken the time to put together this brief tutorial.
Jacket & Shirt Sizing
In absence of an established military size chart, we measure each jacket or shirt from armpit to armpit to get a rough idea of how it fits. If a garment is between sizes, we mark it one size down. For example, if a shirt measures 19.75" from pit to pit, it is marked as a small rather than medium.
To measure pit to pit, close up your shirt or jacket and measure from armpit to armpit.
This is our measurement guide that we use to measure garments without an existing military size chart:
14"-15" PtP = XXS
16-17" PtP = Extra Small
18"-19" PtP = Small
20-21" PtP = Medium
22-23" PtP = Large
24-25" PtP = Extra Large
26-27" PtP = XXL
28-29" PtP = 3XL
Pant Sizing
We typically convert pants to US waist and inseam sizes. If a pair of pants is between sizes, we mark it one size down. For example, if a pair of pants measures as a 33 waist, it is marked as a 32 waist.
To take these measurements we lay a pair of pants flat on the ground. We then measure across the waist and double the measurement. For example, if a pair of pants measures 16" across the waist it will fit a US 32 waist.
To determine inseam we measure from the crotch seam to the bottom of the cuff. For example, it a pair of pants measures 30" from the crotch seam to the bottom of the cuff we will list it as a 30 inseam or 30L.
Surplus Condition Guide
- Unissued
- These items are brand new. They may sometimes exhibit signs of storage. They may be new in their original factory packaging, but most times will not be.
- Issued; Good / Issued
- These items are in issued/used condition but are fully functional. This grade of surplus item may also exhibit signs of use such as stampings, small stains or general dirtiness.
- Issued items will not have missing or broken buttons, zippers or be missing any functional components unless noted as such in the product description. Any items you purchase that are marked as "Issued; Good" but exhibit these defects will be replaced free of charge by Americana Pipedream.
- Grade 2
- These items are in issued/used condition but have defects that impede function. This may include missing buttons, broken zippers, holes and tears. They may also be missing components.
- This is the lowest grade of surplus item that we carry and they are not eligible for returns or exchanges due to condition.
